My writing appears in seven different monthly print publications for September 2011, which is on par with my previous highest single-month tally (December ‘10) — though this one is additionally significant due to the appearance of my first contributions for Edge, which also happens to be my first UK magazine. Edge is a hugely respected publication that has been around since 1993 and hosted some of the strongest voices in our industry, and it’s an outlet that I have wanted to contribute to for some time now.

In the September 2011 issue of Edge, you’ll find a four-page preview of the new SSX on pages 50-53, which includes an opening splash page spread and then two very packed pages of text based on an interview with the creative director of the game. The article covers some of the unique tech and features planned for the game, and when the issue debuted in early August, it was also the first time any details on the planned social and multiplayer functions were discussed. Later in the issue, you’ll find a feature titled “The Misfits,” which spotlights 50 games forgotten by history. I wrote up just five of these blurbs, but it was my first-ever contribution to the publication and I’m really happy to be a part of it. And I have two more pieces slated for an upcoming issue, so you’ll hopefully hear about those soon.

This month’s issue of @Gamer magazine contains a couple of significant contributions from me, notably a six-page feature called “The New Classics” on pages 58-63. I pitched and executed this piece, which selects eight retail releases from each of the three current console systems to put on a pedestal as the titular modern classics, plus there’s a tiny sidebar for each with a handful of excellent downloadable titles, as well as a quick nod to some of the top PC games in recent years.

I really love the art design on this feature, and while the topic is sure to be divisive for many, it’s just a quick and interesting way to remember some of the best titles in recent years. And then in the back of the book, I have a two-page review of Madden NFL 12 on pages 76-77. It’s the first time I’ve done a proper review of a Madden game, and I ended up really getting into and enjoying it. In fact, I grabbed a retail copy on my own dime and just started up a new franchise.

Over in Official Xbox Magazine, you’ll find a pair of reviews from me in this issue. On page 71 is a one-third page review of Kinect title Wipeout: In the Zone, which has some technical issues but is surprisingly engaging; and then over on page 83 is a one-third page review of downloadable title Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team (online version), which is a light offering but very entertaining. And as posted here a couple days back, I also ended up reviewing the full retail title Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (online version here) for Official Xbox Magazine, which will appear in the December 2011 issue.

I also have two articles in the September issue of Nintendo Power, starting with a bite-sized review of Camping Mama: Outdoor Adventures for Nintendo DS, which actually comes out this week — so I’m not going to share any opinions here, in case there’s an online embargo in effect. Feel free to check out the issue, though! And then in this issue’s super-sized Community section, you’ll find a full-page piece on page 91 that spotlights some excellent homemade plush toys from a fan creator, including Gannondorf, Pyramid Head, and Billy Hatcher. I have a load of Community pieces in the pipeline, as usual, so you’ll definitely keep seeing those in upcoming issues.

Over in Mac|Life, I have a two-page spread in the Start section that details out a “perfect Apple dorm setup for under $1000” using an iPad with various accessories and other helpful bits (web version). I really liked the way they designed the page here, since it’s a graphic-heavy, text-light article. And though I reviewed Madden for @Gamer this month, I also have a one-page interview-based article about the game’s new presentational elements in the September issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine. This issue came out weeks before the same month’s @Gamer, due to different print cycles, and you can find this article on page 18. Also in that issue, I have a one-third page review of the below average Transformers: Dark of the Moon on page 86. And finally, over in GamePro, there’s a blurb from my online review of Wii Play Motion on page 90!

Ka-boom. Magazines are awesome.
